For our IP, Legal Affairs and Pre-commercial Alliances organization based at our Headquarters in Lausanne, we are looking for a

Trainee Patent Counsel 80-100%

(Permanent position)

Reporting to the General Counsel, Director IP, Legal Affairs amp; Pre-commercial Alliances, you will join a team of 2 Senior Patent Counsels.

Your responsibilities will be but not limited to:

  • Drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications worldwide in line with Debiopharm’s strategy, including coordinating and overseeing external patent attorney work
  • Working closely with Ramp;D and business teams to identify and capture patentable subject-matter, and to build and put in place business-driven IP strategies
  • Conducting prior art searches as well as assessing/monitoring freedom-to-operate aspects of research and/or development projects
  • Assisting with litigation-related matters, including challenges to or defence of patents in opposition or invalidation proceedings
  • Conducting IP due diligences to support licensing or investment activities
  • Providing strategic IP advice to project, scientific and business teams
  • Collaborating with Legal Counsels and participating in drafting IP-related clauses in contracts
  • Conducting internal trainings on IP related topics, and increasing IP awareness within Debiopharm

Requirements

  • At least 3 years patent experience gained in-house in a pharmaceutical company, or in private practice working on life science projects
  • Partially qualified European Patent Attorney a plus
  • Master’s degree in organic chemistry or life sciences, ideally followed by a PhD or 3-4 years of research/industry practice in the pharmaceutical industry
  • A good understanding of IP laws in jurisdictions beyond EP, including US, JP, and China
  • Experience of developing and executing business-driven IP strategies
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken), French a strong asset, and additional languages a plus
  • Excellent organization skills, rigor, attention to detail while being able to see the big picture
  • Ability to innovate, analyse and solve critical problems
  • Initiative, anticipation and time management skills to handle multiple ongoing projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams within a matrix organization
  • High communicative, persuasive and social skills
