Job Description

Frontiers is a fast-growing open-access academic publisher with headquarters in Lausanne Switzerland, employing over 700 people. Frontiers has massively invested in data acquisition and modeling, leading to the deployment of sophisticated data products to further accelerate its business.


We are looking for a Data Scientist with experience in natural language processing (NLP) to join our data science team in Lausanne. Your main focus will be the development of state-of-the-art NLP algorithms for extracting knowledge from the scientific literature to build a knowledge graph.


You will work together with product owners, machine learning engineers and data engineers in order to build machine learning products that can advance Frontiers’ business. We are a diverse team of people from over 30 different countries with offices in Lausanne, Madrid, London, Seattle and Beijing. We are operating in small teams, with freedom for independent work and fast decision making.


Responsibilities

  • Development, optimization and evaluation of NLP models and pipelines
  • Technological review of data science solutions and communication to management
  • Proactive identification of opportunities for potential products within Frontiers

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or similar
  • Fluency in English and strong communication skills
  • Demonstrable experience in NLP tasks such as named entity and relation recognition/linking
  • Experience in semantic search, text summarisation, word/sentence/document embeddings
  • Familiarity with knowledge graphs and graph embeddings
  • Proficiency in Python, including its data/statistical/NLP packages (e.g. NumPy, SciPy, pandas, scikit-learn, spaCy, HuggingFace transformers, AllenNLP)
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, Keras, Tensorflow)
  • Willingness to share and adopt best work practices on a common codebase (Python packaging, version control, pull requests, testing, continuous integration)
  • Experience with SQL
  • Familiarity with big data platforms (e.g. Spark, Azure Databricks) is a plus
